Bangladesh has taken a significant step towards promoting renewable energy by introducing a new rule that mandates all new buildings with large rooftop spaces to install net-metered rooftop on-grid solar systems. The rule, which came into effect recently, demands all buildings with rooftop spaces exceeding 92.2 square meters to have a solar power system as a prerequisite for grid connection. This move is expected to significantly reduce the country's dependence on non-renewable energy sources and contribute to the government's clean energy goals.

This bold initiative by Bangladesh follows similar steps taken by other countries to transition towards clean energy. The net-metering system allows building owners to sell excess energy generated by their solar panels to the national grid, thereby providing them a steady source of income while also fulfilling the country's energy needs. Net-metering also allows building owners to reduce their reliance on the grid and help save on energy bills.

As per reports, Bangladesh has introduced this rule to help promote solar energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The government is committed to ensuring that its citizens have access to clean and affordable energy as the country aims to achieve its sustainable development goals. Experts have lauded the move, stating that such incentives help to create a market for solar energy and can lead to more people adopting renewable energy systems in the long run.

For buildings with rooftop spaces exceeding 92.2 square meters, net-metered solar power systems is obligatory. Owners seeking single-phase grid connections must install a net-metered solar system with a minimum capacity of 1 kW, while those requiring three-phase connections must meet a 3 kW capacity requirement. The same rules apply to schools, hospitals, and charitable organizations with at least 1,000 square feet of rooftop space.

Bangladesh is primed to emerge as a leader in the transition towards clean energy, with initiatives like this paving the way for a sustainable future. The government must continue to implement such policies to encourage the uptake of renewable energies, thereby contributing towards building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world for future generations.
